newcomers has lots of resources about how to use Dreamwidth and where to find things you'll enjoy here. If you're coming from Tumblr, soc_puppet is posting tutorials for that angle.

Most people on Dreamwidth are pretty laid back. There are assholes everywhere, of course, so if you find any here, just back away and try someone else. You can find topical lists of communities you might like here.

Watch for Three Weeks for Dreamwidth coming April 25-May 15. It's easy to make friends during the higher traffic, and there are usually lots of fun things to do.
